Sonoran Desert Great Horned Owl
Location in the view: Third Column, top
Description : With a round face along with ear tufts and a white throat, Great Horned Owls are the largest owl in the Sonoran deserts. They have giant cat-like eyes that do not move. Trying to capture those characteristics, I decided to paint the owl perched on the oldest saguaro in the desert with a decidedly unimpressed stare.
Materials : This is an original mixed media painting on Yellow Ochre colored handmade paper, with gouache, embroidery threads and beads . The size of the painting is approximately 5" x 7" and is mounted in a float frame. The overall size of the frame is approximately 6"x 8". It comes varnished with 2 coats of Krylon Kamar spray varnish to ensure protection from sunlight over time.
The frame is handmade in my home studio from pinewood and has been painted the same shade of Pink in gouache paint with couple layers of Krylon spray varnish and two layer of Liquitex Matte varnish. It comes in two parts that are attached with screws on the back. If ever need be, the painting can be detached from the outer frame by removing the said screws.
Artist's signature with the date on the side and back of the frame.
