Shakespearean Starlings
It is said that Eugene Schieffelin, the chairman of the American Acclimatization Society, decided to introduce to North America every bird species that was ever mentioned by Shakespeare in his works. He released over 60 imported starlings in the Central Park of New York city. So what has happened by releasing 5 dozen of these blackbirds in the 1800s? Now there are close to 200 million starlings and they are known to have become invasive species, driving the native ones to extinction. Here are three shining birds hanging out over the pine branches, planning and scheming of world domination.
This is an original mixed media painting on a very dark green colored handmade paper, with gouache, embroidery threads and beads . The size of the painting is approximately 5" x 7" and is mounted in a float frame. The overall size of the frame is approximately 6"x8". It comes varnished with 2 coats of Krylon Kamar spray varnish to ensure protection from sunlight over time.
The frame is handmade in my home studio from pinewood and has the pine needles and branches extended in acrylic paint and a single coat of clear water based varnish. It comes in two parts that are attached with screws on the back. If ever need be, the painting can be detached from the outer frame by removing the said screws.
Artist's signature with the date on the side and back of the frame.
Last slide is to show how I painted the frame.
